Welcome to this Virtual Roundtable discussion with Dr Kamel Hothi OBE, Non Executive Director at TLC Lions, on leadership styles and the unconscious bias.

Unconscious biases and the ingrained, usually unintentional but automatic stereotypes that can influence one’s behaviours. But are there leadership styles that need to be challenged in relation to work environments? How can business leaders become the change-makers and advocates when it comes to biases?

Kamel came to Britain from India in the ’60s for a better life only to encounter racism and hardship. Working her way up from cashier to Director across the Banking sector, Kamel has experienced first-hand the struggles of smashing glass ceilings, discrimination, lack of cultural knowledge and gender imbalance. Whilst adhering to her traditional values and home commitments, they didn’t stop Kamel wanting to be treated equally and have her voice heard. This drive resulted in reaching senior heights, leaving a legacy across a number of major projects which have shaped the banking industry today. Alongside sharing her story, Kamel sets out the business case for, why does inclusion matter? How does this impact the bottom line? How can we get more out of our teams if as leaders we’re showing an empathetic example?

Kamel is ranked in the top 100 most influential BAME Leaders in the UK and was awarded an OBE for services to promoting diversity in banking. Alongside her career as a TLC Lion, Kamel talks honestly about the upward struggle she faced to reach success despite a number of forces acting against her will.
