The Role of Higher Education and Research in interdisciplinary AI

In partnership with the Office of Science and Innovation at the Embassy of Sweden, London and the British Embassy, Stockholm, The Swedish Chamber of Commerce in the UK will host a high-level delegation of Swedish university presidents to visit AI focused universities, organisations and other key stakeholders. The purpose of this delegation is to create insights into and a better understanding of the research and innovation ecosystem for AI in the UK, to strengthen networks, and to promote Swedish AI initiatives. The delegation will spend two days in the UK to meet with world-leading universities, research funding organisations, representatives from research infrastructure institutes and Swedish companies investing in the British research and innovation ecosystem.

Background

Sweden and the United Kingdom have long-standing trade relations and research collaborations. The UK has four of the world's top ten universities and a technology sector worth over one trillion dollars. Since Brexit, the UK government is striving for international recognition of the country’s strengths and ambitions in science and technology. The UK has been a trusted research partner for Sweden for decades and the special bonds must continue to be nurtured and developed. In 2022 the Swedish government opened an Office for Science and Innovation at the Embassy of Sweden in London to support strategic collaboration in research, innovation and higher education.

In March 2023 British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak launched a Ten Point Plan for Science and Technology in which five technologies were identified as critical for the British economy. AI is on this list (together with Quantum, Semiconductors, Telecommunication and Engineering Biology). In June, the Swedish and British Prime Ministers made a joint leadership statement with focus on defence and security, and science and innovation.

Join the programme and get the chance to:

  • Discover firsthand the strategic vision of The UK Parliament, emphasizing the critical role of AI and its integration into scientific and technological advancements.

  • Immerse yourself in Innovation District, a vibrant hub of AI-driven research and data science. Witness groundbreaking AI applications and engage with experts as guest speakers.

  • Explore Institutes where AI intersects with life sciences, unlocking breakthroughs in healthcare and genetics. Experience the transformative power of AI in medical research and treatment.

  • Step in to the AI Centre and engage with leading experts pushing the boundaries of AI research. Drive societal impact and create a sustainable future.

  • Have Dinner at The Ambassador’s Residence: Invite alumni of choice and network with leaders from academia, industry, and government to exchange ideas.
